Join NEBC’s Rocky Mountain Chapter for lunch and a conversation with recently appointed Idaho Department of Environmental Quality Director Curt Fransen. Mr. Fransen was appointed by Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter in February 2012, after serving five years as the agency’s Deputy Director. He also served as Chief of the Environmental Quality Section of the Attorney General’s Natural Resources Division and is intimately familiar with the region and its challenges. He will discuss the agency’s priorities and initiatives, and his vision for the future of the agency.

As a regulatory agency, DEQ enforces various state environmental regulations and administers a number of federal environmental protection laws including the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. The agency is committed to working in partnership with local communities, businesses, and citizens to identify and implement cost-effective environmental solutions.

Join NEBC’s Energy Forum, Washington for a discussion on the fundamental concepts of Groundwater Heat Pump (GWHP) systems and Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES). These methods use the thermal properties of water, soil, and rock, and the hydraulics of groundwater, to transfer thermal energy to and from the subsurface. In a typical GWHP system, thermal energy can be extracted from groundwater for heating buildings or injected into groundwater for cooling buildings. The water is then pumped back into the ground. In an ATES system, groundwater can be heated or cooled and injected into the aquifer for recovery later in the year.
Speakers:
Peter Schwartzman, Principal Hydrogeologist, Pacific Groundwater Group
Linton Wildrick, Associate Hydrogeologist, Pacific Groundwater Group
Lunch will be provided. There is no charge, but please RSVP so we’re sure to order enough food. Forum activities are informal and open to all. Join us and be part of the conversation. Thanks to our hosts at EnviroIssues.

Cleaning up a contaminated site usually requires the use of energy, water, and other resources, thereby creating an environmental footprint of its own. Green Remediation is the application of technologies and approaches that reduce a cleanup project’s environmental impact. The U.S. EPA has developed a methodology for evaluating a project’s environmental footprint – in order to reduce it, and to improve the project’s outcome under any regulatory program.
Kira Lynch of EPA Region 10’s Office of Science and Policy will discuss the agency’s Clean and Green policy as well as the recently published Methodology for Understanding and Reducing a Project's Environmental Footprint report, and how the formalization of green remediation methodology compliments EPA’s broader portfolio of remediation policies.
Nick Garson of Boeing’s EHS Remediation Group will discuss Boeing’s sustainable remediation program and, through the use of two case studies, how Boeing was able to apply green remediation technology and practices in order to comply with EPA’s Clean and Green policy.
Speakers:
Kira Lynch, U.S. EPA Region 10 Office of Science and Policy
Nick Garson, P.G., Boeing EHS Remediation Group

The theme “Getting to Development” reflects the hands-on, practical nature of this year’s event. Work sessions will dig deep into issues associated with building on brownfields, as well as, provide a forum for discussion of “sustainability” in the current economic and real estate climate of record breaking property foreclosure and bankruptcy rates.
